Acquavella Sr. opened the gallery in the 1950s with Italian Primitives and the Italian Renaissance period. In the 1960s, the gallery presented Impressionists. With the arrival of Acquavella son, the gallery turned to moderns (Picasso, Miro, Matisse, etc.) and in the late 1970s, the aforementioned son opened a post-war American contemporary department (De Kooning, Pollock, Rothko...), then essentially Anglo-Saxon, with Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, David Hockney..
