Jewish cultural center. Here, among other things, concerts by American singers are held. The Y'S Chamber Symphony, founded in 1977, has earned a reputation as one of Manhattan's finest small ensembles. Is the 92nd Street Y the prototype (New York version) of those houses of culture André Malraux dreamed of? The greatest American and foreign writers, poets and artists come here to give public readings and present their works in progress - and have been doing so since it opened in 1939. In the magnificent theater, we have seen and heard T.S. Eliot, Pablo Neruda, Dylan Thomas, Allen Ginsberg, John Ashbery, Saul Bellow, Anthony Burgess, Nadine Gordimer, Günter Grass, Eugène Ionesco, Mario Vargas Llosa, Kenneth Koch, Doris Lessing, Norman Mailer, Octavio Paz, Amos Oz, William Styron..
We can add a substantial list of activities, indicative of the best American state of mind when it comes to access to culture and personal fulfillment. 92nd Street Y organizes evenings and parties, on site or in town, readings and meetings with young writers, author film screenings, creativity workshops for children, dance classes, shows, concerts, debates, seminars to reflect on all the ways of living in the city (finding a job, finding a lover...).
Last but not least, a series of guided (and essentially cultural) tours of New York and the surrounding area.
