NEW YORK CITY OPERA
Go there and contact
In the shadow of the Metropolitan, housed in the David H. Koch Theater (formerly the New York State Theatre), the NYCO was founded in 1944 and directed, not surprisingly, by soprano Beverly Sills for some ten years, until 1988. Prices here are lower than at the Metropolitan, the architecture more interesting than that of its overwhelming neighbor, subtitles (in English) enable you to follow the plot, the singers are mostly American and the productions, in addition to the classics, include operettas and premieres. It's possible to go backstage at the city's biggest opera concerts from September to May.
