The Broadway Theatre is one of five Broadway theaters that face directly onto the famous street. It opened in 1924 as B. S. Moss's Colony, a leading movie house. The most notable film shown there in the early years was Walt Disney's Steamboat Willie, which opened in 1928 and introduced American audiences to an adorable mouse named Mickey Mouse. The theater moved to the stage from 1930 to 1934, when it was renamed Broadway. From 1934 to 1940, the venue was once again dedicated to film screenings, and offered the premiere of Disney's Fantasia in 1939. In 1940, however, it returned to legitimate theater production and, with the exception of a brief period as a Cinerama cinema in the 1950s, has remained in the realm of live theater presentation ever since. The original Italian Renaissance facade was clad in polished granite when a skyscraper was built over the theater in 1991. The Broadway Theatre offers assistive devices for people who are blind, deaf, visually impaired and/or have hearing loss. Infrared assistive listening devices are available for every performance. In addition, starting four weeks after a play's official premiere, portable audio description devices, portable captioning devices and unlimited access to downloadable audio description and/or captioning for personal mobile devices are available free of charge. Prior to this, we offer live subtitles via CART using a portable device, upon request with two weeks' notice. The Broadway Theatre is not fully wheelchair accessible, but wheelchair spaces are available in the orchestra. The theater also has wheelchair-accessible restrooms and a water fountain. Theater policies prohibit the use of cameras, recording devices, cell phones, beepers and other electronic devices during the performance, unless authorized by Accessibility Services. Latecomers will be seated at management's discretion. Wheelchair and mobility-impaired seating is intended for people with mobility impairments. Children under the age of four will not be admitted. No outside food or drink is allowed, except in cases of medical necessity. Weapons are not permitted on the premises.
