This is the first Off-Off Broadway (a term used to describe small theatres hosting less well-known theatrical productions than those performed on Broadway). Founded in 1961 by the legendary producer Ellen Stewart, and frequented by Andy Warhol, Sam Shepard, Nick Nolte and Bette Midler, it offers several experimental plays every night. E.T.C. is the acronym for "Experimental Theatre Club". Previously confined to a small basement room, the Mama is now a cultural institution in the city.
