After spending $150 million on renovations, the Marquis Hotel has succeeded, and you'll be amazed. To access this bar without getting lost in the hotel, first go to the3rd level and then take the elevators to the 47th floor. The journey to the top is quite impressive, as the elevators are outside and made of glass, and it's easy to see how fast you're going. Sensitive stomachs please, or close your eyes! On arrival, a hostess will direct you to the bar. On the other side is the restaurant, and the bill won't be the same.
In the evening, the view is breathtaking and splendid, with all the lights of Times Square, its buildings and Manhattan at your feet. It's a truly panoramic view, as the bar is set on a platform that rotates gently over the course of 1 hour. The atmosphere in this bar is not exactly euphoric, but rather touristy, calm, sober and chic.
Suits and ties are not de rigueur, but if you don't want to be turned away, make a tiny effort. A smart tip: arrive a little before 9 p.m., because after that time, there's an entrance fee to pay (US$5). Drinks are quite expensive (around US$10), but the location and view justify the price. A good alternative is to come for brunch on Sundays (from 10.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., around US$70). The continental buffet is impressive, with a special mention for the hot chocolate fountain that attracts gourmet tourists from all over the world.
