Leading figures in contemporary journalism write every week for this major magazine, which covers a wide range of subjects from politics to culture. The New Yorker underwent a veritable revolution in 1992 with the arrival of its new editor-in-chief, Tina Brown, a former Vanity Fair editor, who wanted to give greater prominence to pop-culture and make the title more accessible. For some, she killed the spirit of the magazine during her six years at its helm, making it too mainstream; for others, she saved it from death. Whatever the case, The New Yorker is still the magazine of reference for the American intelligentsia. The weekly is known the world over for its very funny, fine and often absurd drawings on the cover and inside pages. Every week, the magazine's 50 regular cartoonists submit around ten sketches, for a total of 500 contributions. The New Yorker also claims to receive around 1,000 submissions a week from both established and amateur artists. In the end, only a dozen of these drawings will be published - the Holy Grail for illustrators the world over!
