THE ABYSSINIAN BAPTIST CHURCH
Old black church in New York with a cross, a gift from his late majesty Haile Selassie, installed in its Gothic temple
Founded in 1808, New York's oldest black church has been housed in its Gothic temple since 1920. The Coptic cross behind the altar was donated by the late His Majesty Haile Selassie, King of Ethiopia. This was the parish of many great activists in the black American cause (including Adam Clayton Jr. - 1908-1972 - the first black man to sit in the US Congress in 1945). Feverish preaching and moving gospel music. Come well-dressed, with discretion and respect.
