Library in Manhattan with a bronze sculpture of the Greek goddess Anthena as a symbol of knowledge

The Low Memorial Library is one of the few buildings to which visitors have free access. Less impressive than the Butler Library, it is nonetheless remarkable, with its ten columns reminiscent of the Pantheon and its staircases on which students like to gather. In front of the library stands Alma Mater, a bronze sculpture created by Daniel Chester French in 1901. Now the emblem of Columbia, it represents the Greek goddess Athena, whose draped garments conceal an owl, the symbol of knowledge.
