HOTEL CHELSEA
The mythical, decadent, unmissable Hotel Chelsea reopened its doors in 2022 and still has plenty of cachet.
The mythical, decadent, must-see Chelsea Hotel is finally free of its scaffolding... After 11 years of construction work, numerous real estate ups and downs, and just as many legal battles with its long-term residents, the city's most famous hotel has been welcoming temporary visitors back since the end of 2022. Built in 1883 and turned into a hotel in 1905, the place achieved notoriety in the 1950s, when many artists and intellectuals stayed there, often free of charge, sometimes for months on end. Mark Twain, Patti Smith, Jack Kerouac, Leonard Cohen and Simone de Beauvoir have all stayed here. Andy Warhol shot Chelsea Girls here in 1966, and Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke wrote the script for 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). A thousand stories have been lived and told here, often fascinating, sometimes frightening. The most famous and tragic of these took place in room 100: it was within its walls that Sex Pistols bassist and punk icon Sid Vicious allegedly stabbed his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, who was found dead next to him on October 12, 1978.
Yes, the Chelsea Hotel has been renovated, but its bohemian spirit and ghosts remain. In fact, some of its long-term residents still live there, some for decades. You don't have to be a hotel guest to visit the lobby or dine at Café Chelsea, its excellent (and expensive) restaurant, whose decor and menu are inspired by French brasseries.
