Small Romanitic museum and synagogue in Manhattan telling the story of Jewish immigrants with many objects and relics
Built in 1927 by Jewish Romaniote immigrants from Greece. The Romaniotes are an obscure branch of Judaism, a sect dating back over 2,000 years to ancient Rome. This community had been kidnapped from Israel and shipped off as slaves to Rome. The ship, caught in a storm, ran aground in Janina, Greece. From then on, they formed a community with rites and worship distinct from other branches of Judaism. The small museum is fascinating and tells their story very well, with many objects and relics. It is also the only Romani museum in the world and the only Romani synagogue in the West.
