NEW GALLERY
Museum dedicated to Austrian and German art in a private mansion with Art Deco objects and temporary exhibitions
This museum is dedicated to Austrian and German art of the early 20th century. The mansion housing the Neue Galerie was built by Carrère and Hastings (also architects of the New York Public Library) in the early 20th century. It is one of the most beautiful buildings on 5th Avenue. Limited in quantity, but uncompromising in quality, the Neue Galerie offers total coherence between its content and its container, the 1900s style of the interior decoration and its intimate feel perfectly in keeping with the period and the aesthetics of the works on display. The2nd floor is devoted to Viennese art of the 1900s. An excellent selection of works by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Alfred Kubin, Oskar Kokoschka and Richard Gerstl coexist with Secession and Art Deco objects, highlighting the relationship between fine and decorative arts. The fundamental modernity of the vision of the artists of this period and the pioneering aspect of their art emerge even more clearly. In 2006, the museum distinguished itself by acquiring Klimt's Portrait d'Adèle Bloch-Bauer (1907) for $135 million, making it one of the most expensive paintings in the world. The third floor remains devoted to these two arts and to the turn of the century, but moves on to Germany with the Blaue Reiter (Kandinsky, Klee, etc.), Brücke (Kirchner, Heckel, etc.) and Neue Sachlichkeit (Schad, Dix, Grosz) movements. The second floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions. A gem of a museum not to be missed.
