NATIONAL ACADEMY MUSEUM
Private mansion housing a museum that offers temporary exhibitions of a very high level with a bookstore of art books
This beautiful mansion was bequeathed to the city by the husband of sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington. Thanks to the artist, a Diana the Huntress, installed at the bottom of the winding staircase, stretches her spire and body in a superb bronze twist. Like London's Royal Academy (Burlington House), the National Academy of Design is an institution devoted to drawing, and more specifically to portraiture. Each member of the Academy is required not only to bequeath a certain number of his or her works to the Academy, but also to teach at the Academy, as the founding painters Thomas Cole, Asher Durand and Samuel F.-B. Morse (the inventor) intended. The museum offers temporary exhibitions of a very high standard (as does the permanent collection, by the way). In the lobby, you'll find a fine art bookshop. If you're a fan of drawing (and especially portraiture), don't miss a visit to this intimate and moving museum, where you'll be delighted by the quantity and quality of the works on offer.
