This center is dedicated to black culture and history in the United States. It all began with the acquisition of the personal collection of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, a Puerto Rican literary man of black descent: 10,000 objects (books, paintings, letters, photographs) dedicated to the history and ideas of the black population of the United States. Today there are 5 million documents, from black Dutch-language milking records to Charlie Parker's radio performances. The collection devoted to jazz is phenomenal.
