MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE
Museum on 2 floors organizing film screenings followed by conferences-debates with the intervention of actors
Opened in 1988 on the site of Paramount Astoria Studios, this museum is entirely dedicated to the history, aesthetics and technique of the seventh art. The exhibitions showcase film professionals, from directors to make-up artists, from scriptwriters to special effects specialists, while showcasing 60,000 objects, cameras, projectors, sets, costumes and documents. All the magic of the image is explained here from A to Z, from its creation to its distribution and marketing. Located on two floors, the museum occupies the former Kaufman Astoria recording studios. There were shot a large number of silent films until the 1920s, when New York was still at the centre of film production, as well as the first live television broadcasts or episodes of the Cosby Show. The main exhibition Behind the Screen presents a large number of elements necessary for the making of a film or television show: equipment, costumes, make-up, dubbing, special effects and the different techniques used. Interactive games and simulations put you in an actor or director situation, without forgetting that you will find some of the emblems of cinema such as the E.T. model or the Yoda puppet from L'Empire contreattaque. Regular film screenings are organised with the participation of actors and are followed by conferences and debates.
