The Hanabanilla artificial lake is the result of a dam built in 1961, providing drinking water for the towns of Cienfuegos and Santa Clara. A small hydroelectric plant also supplies the surrounding area with electricity. The lake is teeming with trout. It is said that Fidel Castro used to rest in one of the lakeside houses, which no longer exist. Historically, the area was also the scene of skirmishes between counter-revolutionaries and the FAR (Revolutionary Armed Forces) in the 1960s.
