Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, a large landowner, freed his slaves in his hacienda (agricultural farm) of La Demajagua and declared war on the Spanish crown. This was, in short, the first step towards Cuba's independence. The complex is now home to a historical and archaeological museum, to take stock, in situ, of one of the most significant episodes in the country's history. A very pleasant walk on a site where nature has regained its rights.
