José Maria Heredia (1803-1839) was born in this late 18th century house. Not to be confused with his namesake, the French Parnassian poet of Cuban origin, José Maria de Heredia (1842-1905), author of the Trophies. Accused of conspiracy by the Spanish power, the first one clandestinely embarks for the United States, where he will die. A lyrical singer of American nature and a fierce supporter of Cuban independence, his birthplace was declared a national monument.
