Built in the 16th century, the church was destroyed several times. The present structure dates from the beginning of the 19th century. The building houses a famous cross, the Santa Cruz de la Parra. It is said to be the only surviving cross of the 29 crosses that Christopher Columbus carried on his journey to the Americas. This cross is so popular that visitors had the annoying habit of taking a small piece of it... A metallic envelope protects it now.

Une visite à faire
Sur le parvis de la basilique se dresse la statue en buste du cacique Hatuey chef indigène qui s’opposa aux envahisseurs espagnols de Las Casas, fait prisonnier, il fut condamné à être brûlé vif. C’est un héros légendaire de l’indépendance cubaine.
Dans la basilique, on verra la croix de Christophe Colomb dont la statue orne l’entrée du parc le long de la plage.

Visite interessante, pour l'interieur lumineux mais surtout pour la Croix de Colomb. L'exterieur de l'église a été restauré et c'est beau.
Attention à l'horaire d'ouverture (voir photo), c'est different de ce qu'on avait trouvé sur les guides.
