RWENZORI FOUNDERS
Beware of Stendhal syndrome! The only one of its kind in Uganda, this foundry and art gallery opened in 2008 in the Rwenzori foothills. Initiated by three Ugandan artists trained in the UK, this workshop and exhibition center, supported by the Ruwenzori Sculpture Foundation, a British corporate body, now employs over fifteen people. The foundry, dedicated to bronze casting, exhibits the work of local and British sculptors in dedicated indoor and outdoor spaces. You'll be able to wander among cast bronze figurines, genre scenes and totemic animals. Although this famous alloy of copper and tin makes up the bulk of the sculptures on display, you'll also see works in marble and soapstone. Similarly, the recycling of everyday objects, such as tires, is an integral part of the creative process of this institution's artists, who are spreaders, bustiers, chiselers, cutters, molders, founders, modelers and statuaries. You should also know that the entire production of the "Rwenzori founders", whether in residence or not, is available for sale. When employees are available, it is also possible to visit the workshops of this artistic center for US$7. To get to the foundry, eleven kilometers north of Kasese, follow the national road to Fort Portal as far as Makumlana, where all you have to do is look out for the signpost.
