FORÊT DE BUGOMA
Located in the center of the Hoima district, the 400 square kilometer Bugoma forest boasts over 275 species of trees (includingironwood), 280 species of butterflies and primates such as the endemic Ugandan mangabey, a real attraction. Since 2024, it has been possible to enjoy chimpanzee tracking in the Bugoma forest, where the habituation of some of our close cousins continues. The cost is 80 USD for tracking and 130 USD for a habituation experiment. At present, around 140 habituated chimpanzees live in the forest, divided into two groups: those north of Mwera and those south of Mwera. The northern group is not yet open to tourists. Trails have been set up by the National Forestry Authority (NFA) to discover the forest's flora and fauna. During your guided forest walk, you may also, with a little luck, spot elephants, buffalo and Uganda cob, many of which have found refuge in the forest following the destruction or disturbance of their natural habitats, caused in particular by the prelude to oil exploitation in the Lake Albert basin. Independent travellers wishing to visit the forest should contact the NFA beforehand. Despite its tourism potential, the Bugoma forest is threatened by illegal logging and encroachment on agricultural land(especially sugarcane and tea plantations).
