Songs, dances and plays punctuate the circumcision ceremony held every two years at the foot of Mount Elgon.
The Bagisu and Sabiny are among the Ugandan peoples best known for perpetuating circumcision according to ancient and rigorous traditions. The ceremonies, rich in symbolism, take place mainly in August, but can extend into December of even-numbered years. They generally involve young men aged between 16 and 20. This rite of passage, called Imbalu among the Bagisu, is a key step towards adulthood, marked by song, dance and festivities. Foreigners are often welcome to attend and discover this unique tradition.
