ASCENSION DU MONT ELGON
Go there and contact
Despite its extraordinary hiking possibilities, Mount Elgon remains relatively uncrowded, although the number of ascents is constantly growing. It is a good alternative to the Rwenzori massif or Mount Kilimanjaro. The climb is not very technical and remains fairly affordable. If it's possible (which is usually the case), you should know that while it's easier and more economical, it can be just as rewarding as climbing the aforementioned mountains. Trekking is possible all year round, although the dry season is more favorable (June to August and December to February). Excursions last from two to six days, with daily walking times ranging from three to eleven hours; they require good physical condition, but no special skills or equipment. Please note, however, that problems of acclimatization to altitude may arise on the final ascent. And remember that the nights can be freezing on the heights of Mount Elgon, so be sure to bring something to keep warm (fleece, gloves, sleeping bag, etc.). Depending on the route you choose (Sasa Trail, Sipi Trail, Piswa Trail or, for the more athletically inclined, the Bushiyi Trail), you'll find caves, gorges and waterfalls along the way, punctuated by magnificent views.
Expeditions can be arranged through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) office in Mbale at a cost of US$100 per day, including park entrance (US$35) and the services of a guide, plus a camping fee (Ush 25,000) and, if required, the assistance of a porter (Ush 50,000 per day; maximum load carried: eighteen kilograms) and a cook (Ush 35,000 per day). The Mt. Elgon Bushiyi Trail Excursion costs US$150. If you're planning to tackle the Wagagai via the Bushiyi Trail, which starts in the village of the same name (18 km east of Mbale, as the crow flies...), you'll need two days. There are many options: you can combine two trails (e.g. the Sasa and Piswa trails, to complete a Budadiri-Kapkwata crossing rather than a round trip on the same trail), do a cross-border hike, discover the picturesque gorge that marks out the Suam Trail (starting from the town of Suam), and so on.
