Palermo's central train station was built in 1886, making it the oldest Italian railway station still in service. It's still in its original state, and immerses passengers in a distinctly Palermo atmosphere from the moment they arrive! Trenitalia provides train services to Catania, Messina, Trapani and Agrigento-Empedocle. In 2023, a 2.1 billion euro project to modernize the Palermo-Catania-Messina line, involving the construction of a 30 km double track with 20 tunnels, was nearing completion, which will cut journey times from 3 to 2 hours.
