CHIESA DELLA GANCIA
Church built by the Franciscans hiding inside the sculptures of Gagini
The church, also called Santa Maria degli Angeli, was built by the Franciscans and takes its name from its original function of gancia: hospice. Its sober 15th century façade, decorated with broken portals, hides inside sculptures by Gagini (Antonello), a painting by Antonello da Palermo and stucco decorations by Serpotta. A superb 16th century Raffaele della Valle organ by Raffaele della Valle is also on display. Next to the church stands the Convento della Grancia. If the door is open, sneak inside and admire a superb fresco under the porch.
