ORATORIO DI SAN LORENZO
Oratory built between 1698 and 1710 considered the masterpiece of Giacomo Serpotta
Between 1698 and 1710, Giacomo Serpotta created the exuberant interior decoration of this building, considered his masterpiece and dubbed the "grotto of white coral". Its stuccoes, adorned with allegorical statues and a lively composition by Putti, make it an exceptional setting. Relief paintings depict the lives of St. Francis and St. Lawrence. Above the altar, again by Serpotta, was the splendid Nativity of Jesus, Caravaggio's last work of 1609, which was unfortunately stolen in 1969.
