CHIESA SAN DOMENICO
Church of beautiful example of the Palermo baroque built on a Renaissance church and built on a first gothic-norman work
This church is a fine example of 17th century Palermo Baroque, but it was built on top of a Renaissance church, itself built on a first Gothic-Norman work in the Middle Ages. The baroque façade is richly decorated with sculptures. In the rather sober interior of this 17th century building are buried illustrious Sicilians, noblemen and artists, including the painter Novelli. The convent, built in the 1300s during the reign of the Normans, has a cloister created by the Chiaramonte family with columns and arches characteristic of this style.
