SAN MARTINO ABBEY
Abbey now housing a library and the Academy of Fine Arts in San Martino Delle Scale
Rebuilt in the 14th century on the ruins of an ancient abbey commissioned by Pope Gregory in the 6th century, it now houses a library and the Academy of Fine Arts. Its façade was designed in the 18th century by Venanzio Marvuglia, who projected the present neoclassical forms of the monastery. Many interesting Mannerist and Baroque paintings are to be found here. Amongst the works, those of Filippo Paladino, Giuseppe Ribera, Paolo de Matteis and Pietro Novelli are particularly noteworthy.
