The Mount Jato archaeological park is located on a plateau at an altitude of 720 metres, dominating the surrounding area. The founding of the city of Laitas by the Elymians preceded the settlement of the Greeks, who added the temple of Aphrodite to the west in the 6th century B.C. and a vast Hellenistic dwelling in the 4th century B.C. Less concerned about preserving the city, the Romans moved in, building a 4,000-seat theater and an agora, but without razing the entire site.
