VISIT OF THE RUINS AND THE WHITAKER MUSEUM
Ruins of an archaic necropolis, those of the great sanctuary where offerings and human sacrifices were deposited
The visit to the island in the middle of the Stagnone lagoon and the visit to the museum are coupled in a single compulsory ticket when getting off the boat, which includes the guided tour of the ruins and the small museum. It takes 2 hours to visit the island on foot. Here you can discover the ruins of this city which was destroyed during a famous siege in 397 BC and never recovered its past splendour. Today you can discover the ruins of an archaic necropolis, the ruins of the great sanctuary of Cappiddazzu with the foundations of a large temple and the Tophet, a sanctuary where human offerings and sacrifices were deposited for the god Baal Hammon. Of the dwellings only the ruins of a building called the Mosaic House remain, because of two large pavements made of white and black river pebbles representing imaginary animals. Excavations have unearthed an artisanal district with the remains of a kiln for pottery. The Maison des Amphores contains a large deposit of amphoras, some of which are partially buried. And to close the visit, the Whitaker Museum, located in the former (magnificent) villa of the island's owner, exhibits beautiful pieces found during the excavations that Whitaker himself undertook. There is a beautiful and mysterious marble statue called Il Giovane di Mozia, found here in 1979, but also masks, vases, amphoras... A superb antique heritage that is really worth the visit.
