ABBAZIA DI SANTO SPIRITO
Completely redesigned abbey with numerous baroque stuccos from the medieval period
The Abbey of Santo Spirito is a small jewel of Sicily. Dating back to the 13th century (1260), it was completely rebuilt afterwards, but the Chiaramontese style portal and the beautiful rose window that opens onto the medieval façade of the church remain.
Many Baroque stuccoes decorate the inside walls of the church, the work of Giacomo Serpotta. The wooden coffered ceiling dates back to 1758. There is a Madonna made by a disciple of Gagini and a 16th century font. From the side of the church you can reach the monastery Badia Grande, dating back to 1290, one of the oldest and best preserved in Sicily. The monastery buildings, of which only the quadrangular cloister, the old refectory and the chapter house remain, are currently occupied by the municipal library. Do not miss the first floor hall with its wooden vaults. But it must be said that it is greed that first attracted us to these places. Here, the Benedictine sisters have excelled for years in the art of marzipan pastry, which can be purchased. It is to be damned!
Continuing along via Atenea, you reach Piazza Gallo, dominated by the Clock Palace. Dating from 1851, it is in Gothic style. Formerly the town hall, it now houses the Chamber of Commerce. On the opposite side is the Palace of Justice. A little further on, Piazza Pirandello is framed by the Town Hall, which leads to the Pirandello Theatre (1870), reminiscent of Venice's famous Fenice.
