Archaeological museum with a superb collection of ancient ceramics and remains of the temple of Agrigento
To better understand the history of the Valley of the Temples and to admire the remains that have been found in and around the site, a visit to the Pietro Griffo Archaeological Museum is a must. This rich museum of 19 rooms, built in 1960, has a collection of almost 6,000 pieces and presents cartographic documentation and ancient documents on the history of Agrigento. It is accessed through the cloister of the religious complex of St. Nicholas (do not miss the visit to the 12th century church of St. Nicholas, which houses the sarcophagus of Phaedra). The museum contains a superb collection of antique ceramics from the 6th and5th centuries BC, and Greco-Italian ceramics from the5th and 3rd centuries BC, with red and black figures. Admire the incredible Portrait of a Greek Actor depicting Perseus painted in 430 B.C. There are also remains of the Temple of Agrigento, archaic statues of deities and parts of the Temple of Zeus with the gigantic Telamon of the Olympia, about 8 m high, reconstructed on a wall (Room VI). There are three more Telamon heads from the Roman Hellenistic quarter (6th and 4th centuries BC) and mosaic pavements from the archaic and late Ancient periods. There is also a magnificent marble statue of the beautiful Ephebe of Agrigento from the5th century BC. (room X). Finally, do not miss the room dedicated to the necropolis (room XI) with Greek and Roman sarcophagi.
