DUOMO DI SAN GIORGIO
Cathedral preserving a magnificent stone altar of the XVIth century and remarkable sculptures
Built by Rosario Gagliardi in 1738, the cathedral dominates the city of Ibla. It is one of the most complete examples of late Sicilian Baroque. It is accessed by a monumental staircase defended by a high iron portal made by Angelo Paradiso in 1890. The carved wooden door is framed by friezes and reliefs with vegetal motifs. Its facade, which is very busy, looks like a set piece, particularly because the spires have been shaped like bulbs, reminiscent of those of Capuchin churches, and volutes connect the different levels housing the statues of Saints John, George, Peter and Paul.
The cathedral is divided into three parts by columns and elegant decorative motifs. The central part is crowned by a neoclassical dome from the 19th century (1820), more than 40 m high, supported by 16 twin columns. The ensemble is extremely harmonious. The interior, which reproduces the triple exterior distribution, preserves a magnificent 16th century stone altar, remarkable sculptures of the unmissable Gagini, who were of all occasions, and a rich treasury. The Taviani brothers shot one of their masterpieces: Kaos. You can also admire in the building six wooden panels, each representing one of the episodes of the martyrdom of St. George, carved in 1799 by Vincenzo Fiorello. Stand under the neoclassical dome and let the light penetrate you through the 43 m high vault designed by Carmelo Cotraro.
