DUOMO DI SAN GIORGIO
Mother church in basilical plan with 3 naves and a sundial in the pavement of the transept
In Modica Alta. It is the dome of San Giorgio, the mother church of the city (1761) by Rosario Gagliardi, which stands out at the top of its 365 steps. Built at the beginning of the 18th century in a late Baroque style, it has a bold façade, with a curiously high tower in its central part. The interior, with a basilical plan with 3 naves, preserves the Scenes from the Gospel and from the life of St. George of 1513, by Girolamo Alibrandi, as well as a sundial in the transept pavement. Not far away is the superb 17th century Polara Palace.
