NOTO ANTICA
Ancient Sicilian city with a superb view of the sea.
16 km from Noto, lie the remains of the ancient Sicilian city. Rapidly Hellenized, it prospered under the Romans and in the Middle Ages. The earthquake of 1693 was devastating, and all that remains are the ruins of the castle and the Royal Gate covered with sage and olive trees. The site is a bit disappointing and an effort of imagination is needed to imagine what this city was like. From the nearby convent of Santa Maria della Providenza, built by Sinatra in memory of the victims of the earthquake, there is a superb view of the sea.
