VENDICARI RESERVE
Nature reserve with many species of migratory and non-migratory birds.
This nature reserve is traversed by 8 km of paths that wind between gorse, reeds, juniper and other aromatic plants such as thyme, wild garlic. Here, we come for the sea, the beach, nature... There are four possible entrances by car: you can park at the paying car park and walk into a territory of small dunes where the reflections of three salt ponds (Piccolo, Grande and Roveto-Sichilli) shine in the distance, separated from the sea by long sandy tongues. Continuing southwards, where the Tellaro river flows into the sea as a delta, there is the cava delle Mosche, a place of rare beauty. Along the way you can see an ancient tonnara, a Swabian tower, a salt mine and a small Byzantine church.
Vendicari is a paradise for many species of birds, migratory and non-migratory, which cross the salt marshes and ponds in all seasons, building their nests in the vegetation of the dunes. You can meet the spoonbill, the crane, the heron, the pelican, the black stork and the Corsican gull but also pink flamingos. Large quantities of "Poseidon's currency", small underwater algae, are scattered along the quiet beaches known as the "coast of the blind", as they are struck at all hours of the day by a blinding light.
The most beautiful sandy beaches are those of Arenile di Eloro, Cala Moscha and Marianelli, but there are also some beautiful caves to explore such as those of "carciofo" or the grotta dalle Cento Bocche.
