DUOMO DI SIRACUSA
Extraordinary cathedral with a monumental staircase having remains of the Greek temple walls
This cathedral is extraordinary: it includes a Greek Doric temple dedicated to Athena, which was converted into a church at the arrival of Christianity. It was rebuilt in 1542 and 1693 following earthquakes, restored around 1700 in baroque style, and finally at the beginning of the 20th century to give the present cathedral. Only its tormented façade and monumental staircase remain Baroque. The pillars that separate the central nave from the side aisles are the remains of the walls of the Greek temple. The canvas, representing St. Zosimus, by Antonello da Messina can be admired
