SANTA LUCIA AL SEPOLCRO
Church of the Norman period that houses the largest catacombs in Sicily.
It stands on the site where the Syracusan Lucia, patron saint of the city (celebrated on December 13 by a procession), is said to have suffered martyrdom in 303. Built in the 12th century, the church was rebuilt during the Norman period, then completely rebuilt at the end of the 17th century. Beneath the church and the adjoining convent lie the catacombs of St. Lucia, which were used from 220 B.C. onwards and which, together with the catacombs of San Giovanni, remain the largest in Sicily. Do not miss to visit this original medieval temple.
