CATACOMBA SAN GIOVANNI
Vast underground necropolis of the IVth century with a space used as a place of prayer
This vast 4th century underground necropolis was dug into a solid layer of limestone rock around the sarcophagus of St. Marcellin, one of the first martyrs. The space is organized in rotundas that served as places of prayer, dimly lit by daylight. It is here that the white marble sarcophagus of Valerius and Adelphia from the 4th and5th centuries, entirely engraved with scenes from the Bible, has been found. The niches dug into the wall accommodate entire families. Others, smaller ones, the bodies of young children.
