CASTELLO MANIACE
Imposing castle of military architecture with a square structure and corner towers
This imposing example of military architecture has a square structure with corner towers. The castle is named after the Byzantine general George Maniakes, who in 1038 managed to wrest Syracuse from the Arabs for a short period. Surrounded today by barracks, it was almost completely rebuilt on an island in the time of Frederick II of Swabia in the first half of the 13th century, but the inlet that separated this island from that of Ortygia has long since been filled in. It was nevertheless built on fortifications from the time of the tyrant Gelon.
