MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO REGIONALE PAOLO ORSI
Magnificent museum with an impressive collection of objects, sculptures and ceramics
It is a magnificent museum located 500 m from the archaeological park which has just reopened in 2020 after extensive renovation work. Now the artifacts are beautifully displayed. Maupassant met a strange creature there: "It has no head, an arm is missing; but never has the human form seemed more admirable and disturbing to me. It is not the poetic woman, the idealized woman, the divine and majestic woman like the Venus de Milo, it is the woman as she is, as we love her, as we desire her, as we want to embrace her. "The one he is talking about is none other than the statue of the Venus Anadyomena, a major piece of the collection (a Roman copy of the first century AD), which was discovered on the very spot where the museum was built, in the gardens of Villa Landolina. Inaugurated in 1988, the museum replaced the one that was once in Ortygia. Highly didactic and remarkably organized, it covers a period from prehistory to Greek colonization in 3 distinct sections: Sicilian prehistory, the region of Syracuse and the rest of Sicily. The collection of objects, sculptures and ceramics is impressive. Among the most important pieces are a marble cornice with a winged gorgonian from the temple of Athena in Syracuse, the statue of a marble kouros from the 6th century BC, a collection of vases from Camarina and Gela, bronze material from the 8th century BC.
