PAPYRUS MUSEUM
Small museum presenting the origin of papyrus and its various uses.
This small museum housed in a beautiful baroque palace in Ortigia explains the origin of the papyrus that grows in the area, present since the time of ancient Greece, and its various uses over time and local civilizations. It was brought from Egyptian Greece in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC and planted along the nearby River Ciane, where it still grows. Objects, ancient documents, writing instruments, ropes, and even boats made of papyrus are displayed here, as well as presses and a herbarium.
