SCALAZZA DI SANTA MARIA DEL MONTE
A remarkable staircase with plaques tracing the history of ceramics from the Arabs to Caltagirone.
This 142-step staircase was built in 1606 to connect the mother church with the square where the senatorial building stood. Since 1954, the risers have been covered with plaques tracing the history of ceramics from the Arabs to the present day. Every year, on Santiago de Compostela, July 25, thousands of coppi (bowls lined with multicoloured paper) are installed which, once lit, reconstitute various shapes and figures. The staircase is decorated with flowers in May for the feast of Mary.
