PALIO DES NORMANDS

This is the "palio" of the Normans, a cousin of the famous palio of Siena, in Piazza Armerina.
Don't miss this original medieval folk festival that was created in 1952 and has about 600 participants, natives who continue the tradition. It is the palio of the Normans, cousin of the famous palio of Siena: it is a race of knights (valiant of course) in medieval costumes, which commemorates the entry into the city of Count Roger of Hauteville (the future king Roger I of Sicily) who freed it from the yoke of the Saracens in 1071. The knights and their horses are dressed by the color dressing each team.
