DUOMO DI PIAZZA ARMERINA
A remarkable cathedral in the center of Piazza Armerina.
With its imposing structure, the cathedral of Piazza Armerina dominates the entire city centre. Built at the beginning of the 17th century, it includes the remains of the pre-existing 15th century church and has a beautiful bell tower with beautiful Catalan Gothic windows. In the evening, the cross at the top lights up like a lighthouse in the middle of the night. The interior, painted in white and blue, gives a pleasant impression of luminosity, adding to its beauty. It preserves some rare pieces, including a precious arcade decorated with reliefs by Gagini, which can be found at the entrance. The altar is enriched by a sumptuous baroque tabernacle that preserves a precious painting of the Virgin of Victory, of Byzantine inspiration. In the chapel, to the left of the choir, you can admire a grandiose crucifix, painted on both sides, by a 15th century Sicilian painter and a Virgin and Child from the same period from Umbria. Note also its large dome of 76 metres in diameter. In summer, weddings are celebrated every day. As long as you are discreet, it is not forbidden to enter the cathedral and watch the celebration from the air. Of course, if you're in shorts and sandals, you'll quickly make a splash in the middle of this parade of elegance and glitter! In Piazza del Duomo, in front of the cathedral, stands the statue of Baron Marco Trigona, the "benefactor of the city", who bequeathed his fortune to build the cathedral that we have today, after his death in 1598.
