PIAZZA VECCHIA
A remarkable square in Piazza Armerina, the oldest in the city.
This square is the oldest in the city. This is where the Normans are said to have settled in 1071. Count Ruggero received Pope Alexander II here when he came to Sicily in 1063. The image of Our Lady of the Victories, which is now in the cathedral, was discovered here. It is also the starting point of one of the most important religious processions in the city, which takes place every year on May 3rd and takes the village to the Guardian Angels Church, in honour of the patron saint, the Virgin of the Victories.
