BASILICA DELLA COLLEGIATA
Church, with beautiful frescoes, on an ancient pagan temple in Catania.
The Collegiata di Santa Maria dell'Elemosina stands out for its elaborate façade. This Jesuit church was rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century by Stefano Ittar, one of the most important Baroque architects of Catania together with Vaccarini, after the earthquake of 1693. Its high concave façade is a fine example of late Baroque. The interior is decorated with beautiful frescoes. The church was built on an ancient pagan temple dedicated to Proserpine.
