PIAZZA DUOMO
Square surrounded by buildings of the seventeenth century, center of city life in Catania.
The centre of city life, it is surrounded by 17th century buildings, including the Palazzo Senatorio, the seat of the municipality (Romanesque windows on the façade). After the earthquake of 1693, the idea of reconstruction was that of an imposing city, worthy of the Spanish magnificence of the time and of its administration. The Cathedral Square was thus born as the seat of civic and religious power and the centre of the new Baroque Catania. Nearby on the via Etnea, notice the city hall, nicknamed "the Elephant Palace", from the 18th century.
