CASTELLO
Medieval castle with an impressive defensive construction on a rock
This famous castle is magnificent and very old, totally medieval, with its impressive defensive construction. Built in lava stone in the 11th century (1076) by the Byzantines and renovated by the Normans, it stands on a rock that seems to want to throw itself into the sea, while overlooking the city. Inside the castle, a small museum of mineralogy and archaeology explains the origin of the Aci villages, dating back to the Greek colonization, and the different lava flows that covered the villages but never the castle.
