Messina is a fascinating town that combines the presence of the sea with numerous historical and cultural attractions. Located on the strait of the same name, in the eastern part of Sicily, it lies practically opposite Reggio Calabria. That's why it's often referred to as the city on the strait. We recommend a visit to the many nearby seaside resorts, as well as to the historic center. Messina's most interesting museums include the Regional Museum, with paintings by Caravaggio and Antonello da Messina, a permanent exhibition on Salvatore Quasimodo and the Gallery of Modern Art. On the art front, the exhibition devoted to the cathedral treasure is also noteworthy. In the historic center, the military buildings are also of great interest, including the Castle of the Most Holy Savior, the Gonzaga Castle and the Royal Citadel. After visiting Messina, you can spend a day exploring Sicily's eastern coast and heading south, you'll arrive in nearby Taormina. Many a romantic poet has fallen in love with this town, founded by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC. While you're enchanted by the cathedral, the Greek theater with its view of Mount Etna, the Villa Comunale and the magnificent Palazzo Corvaja, don't forget to relax on one of its magnificent beaches. And on the way back, you can't fail to admire the volcano, or even devote a day to excursions.
